Manager Pulp & Power Operations

FPC Bangor is working with a large pulp mill in Eastern, Canada, looking for a Pulp & Power Manager.  Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Manager Pulp & Power is responsible for the overall management of sulphite, wood-handling, steam plant and maintenance activities of the mill.  Must have at least 10 years management experience in a pulp mill.

The positions reporting to the Manager Pulp & Power include:

  • Manager Maintenance
  • Manager Power Recovery Cogeneration
  • Manager Pulp Operations
  • Project Engineer
  • Senior Technical Advisor
  • Health and Safety Superintendent.

 ACCOUNTABILITIES

  •  Manages the Pulp Mill using a combination of daily review with production, maintenance and steam plant front line management as well as spending time on the floor where the incumbent will lead and guide direct reports.
  • Attends and supports the daily mill production meetings. 
  • Participates in other meetings such as weekly business reviews, capital/project reviews, safety, staff meetings and budget reviews.
  • Manages salaried employees through regular group or individual contacts which include conversations, performance discussions, project advancement, etc.
  • Strives to ensure best possible support for pulp mill activities by working closely with operating personnel.
  • Actively supports and promotes safe work practices throughout the mill by being present at safety activities and personally encouraging safe behaviors.
  • Ensures processes and systems are in place for positive labor relations, community relations, training and development, and health, safety and environmental compliance.
  • Responsible for overall mill operations during certain weekends on a rotation basis.
  • Works with Human Resources to implement a succession planning process for both salaried and hourly workforce. Ensures that both salaried and hourly employees have adequate training to support activities of the pulp mill.
  • Coordinates the development of the annual budget for the pulp mill with all departments.  The incumbent is expected to identify and implement opportunities to improve cost performance.
  • Ensures processes and systems are in place to take full advantage of effective inventory control.
  • Develops and maintains a cooperative working relationship with union personnel and officers.
  • Ensures proper processes and systems are available to provide for sufficient quality and quantity of round wood, chips and bark for the operations.
  • Ensures optimum profit margin as it relates to product sales versus production cost.
  • Accountable within framework for developing, implementing and maintaining the
    5-year strategic plans and the annual operating budget.
  • Advises and/or recommends to the Vice-President on issues pertaining to production, organizational issues and process changes, process improvements (identifying opportunities, designing improvements, coordinating implementation).
  • Bilingual, Canadian citizens preferred
