TODAY’S EMPLOYEES ARE NEVER TRULY ON VACATION 72% ALWAYS CHECK EMAIL AND VOICEMAIL
FPC Workplace Web Poll Data Also Indicate that Managers and Executives Are More Likely to Only Respond to Emergencies, While Entry-level and Mid-level Employees Tend to Respond to All Messages.
NEW YORK, April 19, 2006—Recruiting professionals at FPC, a national executive search firm with more than 70 offices, ask job candidates visiting the site their opinions about workplace issues.
This latest data from the FPC Workplace Web Poll across all levels and industries, indicate that employees are tied to the office, even when on vacation.
Of 978 respondents* across numerous industries and levels finishing the sentence “When I am on vacation I…”
• 36% said “…always check email and voicemail and respond to all.”
• 36% said “…check email and voicemail but only respond to emergencies.”
• 18% said “It depends on what’s going on at work whether I check in.”
• 8% said “…don’t check email or voicemail and tell my office only to contact me in an emergency.”
• 2% said “…am unreachable – after all, I’m on vacation”
* +/- 3% margin of error
When broken down further, results indicate that while executive level employees are checking with the office, they are only responding to emergencies, while entry level and mid level employees feel compelled to respond to all correspondence. It is interesting to note that while there seems to be a difference among job levels, there is no appreciable difference between the over and under100k salary groups.

“It’s not surprising to me that today’s employees feel compelled to keep up with what’s going on at the workplace when on vacation, particularly among the entry and mid-level ranks. With remote and wireless email access, even the upper ranks are now staying involved. The commentary on the employee’s desire for work-life balance could be showing that rather than forego a vacation, people are finding ways to use technology to keep in contact while on those precious few days away from the office.” said FPC President Ron Herzog.
